UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State men’s and women’s lacrosse both won Big Ten battles on Sunday, April 6.
No. 8 Penn State men’s lacrosse started the day in an away battle against No. 14 Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The Nittany Lions and the Wolverines could not be separated through the first three quarters with Michigan leading 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter. That’s when Penn State took over winning the fourth quarter 5-1 and winning the game 11-8.
Matt Traynor, who scored his 100th career goal, Jack Aimone, and Liam Matthews all scored at least two goals in the victory. It was Reid Gills that was the story of the game, though, the freshman went 8-of-9 from the faceoff x for Penn State. Jack Fracyon also had nine saves on the day.
The Nittany Lions are now 7-3 on the year and 1-2 in the Big Ten. The season’s highlights include wins against No. 1 Cornell and Colgate.
The women’s team was also successful this Sunday, defeating Ohio State 12-11 in overtime at Panzer Stadium. Payton Wainman was the hero, scoring the golden goal to help Penn State win their fourth consecutive Big Ten game.
Wainman and Emma Kelly led the way on offense, each scoring three goals and recording one assist. Sydney Manning was a brick wall on defense with 12 saves.
Penn State moves to 6-7 on the season and 4-2 in the Big Ten. After six straight losses, Penn State’s season looked to be over, but the Nittany Lions have turned it around with four wins in a row. This includes a win against No. 10 Michigan in overtime.
