BELLEFONTE — At Sunny Side Paddling Park in Bellefonte, a kayaking legend is making it easier for kids to get into the sport.

Starting in April of 2025, Dave Kurtz will host an Intro to Kayaking course specifically for kids and beginners. There will also be fall sessions.

The course will involve six sessions, one per week, all one to one and a half hours. Students can choose to attend on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Classes start at 4:30 p.m. or 6 p.m.

The course is for ages 9-17+ and will include a maximum of five students. All equipment including helmets, life jackets, paddles and kayaks are included.

Following the conclusion of the course, students will take a final exam in the form of a timed 9-gate course.

The sessions will cost $125 including a $36 membership to Mach One. This allows students to use the Paddling Park and the equipment for the year.

The instructor, Kurtz, has spent the better part of the last 60 years training and coaching paddlers.

As a teacher, he has coached junior and U.S. Olympic team members and as an athlete, Kurtz competed in four World Championships.

To sign up for the fall sessions, check in with the Tussey Mountain Outfitters or leave your contact information at the drop box on Sunnyside Boulevard in Bellefonte at the Mach One team’s headquarters.
