Local athlete wins gold medal in twirling championship

BELLEFONTE — Bellefonte resident Breanna Dickey, 15, won a gold medal in Junior 3-Baton and a silver medal in Junior 2-Baton at the 2023 World Baton Twirling Championship Nation’s Cup.

The twirling equivalent of the Olympic Games was held Aug. 9-13 in Liverpool, England. More than 900 of the best sport baton twirlers from 21 countries, including the U.S., Canada, France, Italy and Japan, competed in the World Championship, which was sanctioned by the International Baton Twirling Federation and supported by the United States Twirling Association.

This was Dickey’s first appearance at the IBTF World Baton Twirling Championship. Dickey is a 10th grader at Bellefonte Area Senior High School. She is coached by PJ Burkin, Dale White and Jonathan Burkin and is a member of The ShowTwirlers, an Altoona-based baton twirling team.
