PHILIPSBURG — Philipsburg Elementary School art teacher Karen King took second place in the Pennsylvania State Education Association’s Jennifer J. DuBois Fabric of Unionism art competition. King won for her artwork “Family Ties.”

King was one of four Pennsylvania teachers and six students who won accolades in the PSEA competition.

The competition aims to generate awareness surrounding the impact and significance of the labor movement both in the past and for the future.

“The arts are a necessary and vital part of the curriculum in our public schools,” Aaron Chapin, PSEA president, said. “Students who study art are more likely to be high academic achievers and to have good school attendance. Pennsylvania is home to an array of talented educators and students, and PSEA is thrilled to showcase their artwork.

“By using their talent to tell the story of the labor movement, these artists are helping educate Pennsylvanians about the accomplishments of labor and its necessity for our future.”

The competition, which is typically held every two years, though due to the COVID-19 pandemic has not been held since 2019, awards $1,000 to first place winners, $500 to second place winners and $250 to third place winners.

“The story of America’s labor movement is a powerful one, and what better way to tell it than with art,” shared the PSEA website. “That is what about a dozen Pennsylvania educators and students did with their award-winning artwork in this year’s Jennifer J. DuBois Fabric of Unionism Art Competition.”
