After spending a week at the high level, Centre County moved to the medium community level for COVID-19 in the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday evening.

At the medium level, the CDC recommends that those at high risk of severe illness talk to their health care provider about whether they need to wear a mask and take other precautions.

The county had spent 12 weeks at the low community level before moving to high last week then down to medium on Thursday. At the high level universal masking in places open to the public is recommended.

State College Area School District, which reinstated a mask mandate in district buildings this week because of the high community level, will return to optional masking on Friday, Superintendent Bob O’Donnell wrote in a message to families on Thursday night. Friday is the district’s last school day for the 2021-22 academic year

Community levels measure new cases and new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 people over seven days, along with the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients. With more than 200 new cases per 100,000, the medium level requires fewer than 10 COVID hospital admissions per 100,000 and/or a seven-day average of less than 10% of hospital beds occupied by COVID inpatients.

Centre County had a case rate of 216.5 and 9.5 new COVID admissions per 100,000 people over the last week, both down from last week, with 7.7% of inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 inpatients, up from 5.7% last week.

Mount Nittany Medical Center had 15 COVID-19 inpatients on Thursday, down from 19 each on Wednesday. None are intensive care or on ventilators. The patients range in age from 30 to 96. Twelve are vaccinated and three are not, according to hospital’s COVID inpatient dashboard.

Over the last seven days, Mount Nittany has had an average daily COVID inpatient census of 16, up from 10.85 the previous week.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s weekly update on Wednesday, Centre County added 351 total new cases over the last week, a 14% decrease from new cases recorded the previous seven days. The county’s seven-day rolling average for new cases is 50.1, down from 57 a week ago.

Centre County has had a total of 37,081 COVID-19 cases (32,874 confirmed and 4,207 probable) since March 2020.

Statewide, 27 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties are at the low level, 23 are at medium and 17 are at high.

The statewide case total since the start of the pandemic is now 2,932,186.
