College Township is now accepting applications from interested residents to fill an upcoming vacancy on its five-member council.

Current council member Paul Takac will resign effective Nov. 30 after being elected earlier this month to represent the 82nd District in the state House. Takac, a Democrat, defeated Republican Justin Behrens for the open House seat.

A little over a year remains on his elected council term.

“This is a bittersweet moment,” Takac wrote in his resignation letter submitted to council and township staff. “While I am obviously excited about my recent election to the House — and look forward to continuing to serve the residents of College Township in that capacity — my tenure on Council has been both a blessing and a privilege, and I will miss working with you all.

“College Township is extremely fortunate to have elected officials, township management, and staff of the highest caliber. I believe that the experience, dedication, and professionalism of the team at College Township stands as a model and a standard for local governance in our Commonwealth.”

To be eligible for consideration to fill the vacancy, applicants must be College Township residents who have been registered to vote in the township for at least one year prior to the date of appointment.

The appointed candidate will serve the remainder of Takac’s term expiring on Jan. 1, 2024.

Applicants should submit an application and resume by 5 p.m. Dec. 7 to township Manager Adam Brumbaugh at [email protected] or by mail to:

Mr. D. Richard Francke, Chair
College Township Council
1481 East College Avenue
State College, PA 16801

Council will conduct interviews with candidates the week of Dec. 12 and will vote on the appointment on Dec. 15. The new council member will be sworn in on Jan. 3.

The position will be on the ballot in the 2023 election for a four-year term beginning Jan. 2, 2024.
