Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Boal Avenue

Geoff Rushton

A 43-year-old Boalsburg man died in a crash on Wednesday night in Harris Township.

According to State College police, a preliminary investigation indicated that at about 8:20 p.m. a jogger was crossing Boal Avenue at the Old Boalsburg Road intersection, near the Pennsylvania Military Museum, and “ran into the side of” a pickup truck with a snow plow attached.

Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers identified the man on Thursday night as Geoffrey P. Mamerow.

Mamerow was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy concluded he died of blunt force trauma and his death was ruled accidental.

Police said the preliminary investigation does not indicate that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. The truck involved is owned by a private company.

State College detectives and a crash reconstructionist were called to the site and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact State College Police at (814) 234-7150, by email or by submitting an anonymous tip through the department’s website.

Boal Avenue was closed between Warner Boulevard and Boalsburg Pike until just before 11 p.m.

Centre LifeLink EMS, Boalsburg Fire Company and Patton Township police also responded to the scene.

Mamerow was an assistant vice provost at Penn State.

“We share our deepest condolences with the family, friends and colleagues of Geoff Mamerow,” Penn State spokesperson Wyatt DuBois said. “Geoff joined Penn State in 2017 and most recently served as assistant vice provost for assessment in the Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research. His many contributions to OPAIR have been important to the success of the unit and the University. He was a well-respected and liked colleague who will be greatly missed.”

Counseling resources are available for Penn State employees through the Employee Assistance Program (866-799-2728), DuBois said.
