Centre Volunteers in Medicine will host a large-scale COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Saturday to help meet increasing local demand.
The “Super Saturday” clinic will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. at Mount Nittany Middle School. A limited number of time slots are still available and appointments can be made through the CVIM website.
Appointments can be made for individuals age 12 and older to receive a first or second dose and for ages 16 and older to receive a booster dose.
The Pfizer vaccine will be available for first and second doses for individuals age 12 and older and for booster for ages 16 and older. Moderna will be available for first, second and booster doses for ages 18 and older. The single-dose Johnson & Johnson will be available for first dose and boosters for ages 18 and older.
Kristi Mattzela, CVIM’s clinical services director, said in a news release that Centre County residents having difficulty getting booster shots and the high COVID-19 hospitalization rate locally and statewide spurred the decision to hold another large-scale clinic.
“We have been told residents from our community are driving an hour for their COVID-19 boosters because of lack of availability locally,” Mattzela said. “Given the low availability of booster appointments and the strong need to get individuals boostered, CVIM has decided to hold a Super Saturday at Mount Nittany Middle School.”
In Centre County, a Mount Nittany Medical Center official reported on Tuesday that overnight the hospital had 76 COVID-19 inpatients, its highest total at any point during the pandemic. Tom Charles, executive vice president of system development, added that the hospital’s average daily census of COVID-19 inpatients so far this month is is 61, eclipsing the previous high average of 49 in December 2020.
Hospitals throughout the region and across the commonwealth are experiencing similar strains as COVID-19 transmission remains high.
“Pennsylvania currently has the highest hospitalization rate in the country and has an overall positivity rate of 14.8%,” Mattzela said. “The situation is dire, and our hospitals are full. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated and everyone 16 and older to get a booster.”
In addition to Saturday’s clinic, CVIM will continue to hold its regular and pediatric vaccine clinics at its Sandy Drive offices. Visit cvim.net/covid-information for details on dates and appointments.
