A West College Avenue restaurant will be closing its doors after 16 years in business.
Herwig’s Austrian Bistro, 132 W. College Ave., will close this summer, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. Owner Bernd Brandstatter cited health issues and declining sales as the reasons for closing the business.
‘Alright everybody, I’ve been dreading this post for a good while,’ he wrote. ‘Here it goes. Due to my constant sciatica in my left leg from 2 ruptured discs and declining sales… I’ve decided to close Herwigs as early as June or August.
‘We’ve really enjoyed the last 15 or so years serving up the best Austrian fare. So if you haven’t been in for a while, this is your time to enjoy it whilst we are still open. I sure will miss everyone of you. It was always about the personal experience with a side of our Austrian home cooking and a bit of humor mixed in.’
Known for its fresh, authentic Austrian cuisine, Herwig’s is also famed for the good-natured, humorous interactions between staff and customers.
Family patriarch Herwig ‘Brandy’ Brandstatter originally opened Herwig’s Edelweiss near Tussey Mountain 1982 after the family moved to State College from Austria. In January 2002 he teamed up with his son Bernd to open Herwig’s Austrian Bistro on South Fraser Street. The restaurant moved to the College Avenue location in 2006.
