After 69 years in business in downtown State College, Moyer Jewelers will permanently close at the end of December.

Owner Lori Moyer said in a news release that the store at 100 E. College Ave. will close at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29.

Moyer announced in October that the shop would be closing after the holidays.

‘It’s a sad and happy time for us,’ she said at the time. ‘Business has been good, but I’ve been involved in the business since I was 9 years old. We feel the time is right to take a new direction in our lives.”

The late B.P. Moyer founded the business in 1949 and since then it has been passed down through three generations. Lori Moyer has operated the store since her parents, Gary and Judy, retired in 2008.

Since announcing the closing, the store has had a going-out-of-business sale, with deep discounts on all kinds of fine jewelry.

‘The sale has been successful, but we still have a good selection of diamond engagement rings, anniversary bands, gemstone rings, earrings and more available at up to 80 percent off,’ Moyer said on Wednesday. ‘This is the last opportunity to acquire the finest jewelry at once in a lifetime prices, because no price beats a going-out-of-business price.”

Moyer also recently awarded a $500 shopping spree to the patron who submitted the oldest receipt from the store.

The honor went to Carol McKeever, of State College, whose winning receipt was dated Dec. 23, 1959. The receipt was for ‘a gents sterling silver identification bracelet, which sold way back then for $4.95, plus 75 cents for engraving and a 4 percent sales tax,’ according to a news release.
