David Michael O'Connell, 64, passed away on September 25, 2017 after a battle with cancer. Born in Johnstown, PA on June 30, 1953 to William and Dorothy (Ober) O'Connell, Dave was raised in State College with his older brother, Bill, and younger sister, Kathy. He graduated from State College Area High School in 1971 and attended Williamsport Area Community College (now Pennsylvania College of Technology) from 1971-1973. Dave was a proud Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Dave worked for several local firms as a registered Landscape Architect. His creatively functional landscapes, streetscapes, parks, and playgrounds spread across the state. Dave was recognized as one of the best in his work. In his free time, Dave was a talented painter and avid musician who played bass, harmonica, and guitar with several local bands. He played at numerous fairs and local venues for decades. His easy-going personality was a gift to his family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Rita (Williams) O'Connell. Dave is survived by two daughters, Joy O'Connell and Jessie O'Connell, his son-in-law Andy Veres, and grandson Ryan O'Connell, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held October 14, 2017 at Pine Hall Lutheran Church on 1760 W. College Avenue in State College. Friends will be received at 10am, and the service will begin at 11. Refreshments will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pine Hall Lutheran Church.
