Sarah “Sally” Cobb Baker passed away on August 5, 2024, after a short illness. She was the middle of three daughters of Fenner Brown Baker, Jr., and Katherine Bynum Cobb Baker, and was born on September 8, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She spent her early childhood years in Paris, Arkansas, and moved to Fort Smith when she was beginning ninth grade.
She attended ninth and tenth grades at St. Scholastica Academy before graduating from Northside High School where she was third in her class of over 600 students.
During the summers of her high school years, Sally attended summer camp in Branson, Missouri, then spent a summer in New Orleans where she attended Isidore Newman Prep School and traveled to Europe the summer before her senior year in high school. After high school graduation, Sally and her older sister, Adele, spent the summer working in Chicago.
Sally attended Emory at Oxford, Georgia, her freshman year in college. She transferred to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in her sophomore year, where she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta. Sally graduated with a degree in Interior Design and worked in Atlanta, Georgia, for the next two years before moving to Tucson, Arizona. There she earned her master’s degree in counseling psychology at the University of Arizona. She then took a position as a Dean of Students at Bluefield College in West Virginia. Sally returned to Arizona to pursue a PhD in psychology at Arizona State University in Tempe before moving to State College in 1984. She initially worked as a psychologist in physical therapy rehabilitation before going into private practice as a counseling psychologist. Those were some of the happiest years of Sally’s life when she was doing what she loved best, helping others to achieve their potential and their goals. She also became a devoted Penn State fan and enjoyed attending many athletic events, especially the football games.
Wherever Sally lived, she was always blessed to have many friends. She loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit many places all over the world. Over the past several years, Sally spent a couple of months each year in Anna Maria Island, Florida, which she loved.
To say that Sally is missed by so many is an understatement. She is dearly loved by her family and many friends.
