Penn State basketball was almost certainly headed towards a rebuilding phase under new head coach Micah Shrewsberry and that movement began late Monday night into Tuesday morning as four Nittany Lions with a likely fifth – if not more – entered the transfer portal.
Senior big men John Harrar and Trent Buttrick lead the way while shooter Myreon Jones and athletic and explosive guard Izaiah Brockington have also entered the portal. Harrar, Buttrick and Brockington will all be immediately eligible as per grad transfer rules while Myreon Jones will be immediately eligible due to COVID-19 rulings per the NCAA.
Senior guard Jamari Wheeler has also entered the portal as well per a report.
Forward Seth Lundy has entered the transfer portal StateCollege.com has learned.
While postseason and coaching change transfers are almost always a part of life, the Nittany Lions’ growing mass transfer situation appears at least in part to center around the firing and/or resignation of former head coach Patrick Chambers – a point of contention and anger among players and longtime staffers.
In turn, as per previous reporting, Tuesday’s news has long been expected:
Additionally, there is a growing feeling that Penn State will likely see a significant number of transfers from its current roster, especially as the NCAA long ago ruled that players who transfer will be immediately eligible at their next stop, a temporary waiver that is likely to become permanent eventually in 2021.
This story will be updated.
