Centre County and Pennsylvania recorded their smallest single-day COVID-19 increases since late July on Monday.
The county had seven new positives, the first single-digit increase since mid-August and the fewest in a day since July 27. The new cases bring the county’s total to 34,715 (30,857 confirmed and 3,858 probable).
Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 25, down from 40 a week ago and 54 two weeks ago.
Pennsylvania reported 596 new cases to bring the statewide total to 2,757,036. It was the smallest single-day case increase since July 26, when there were 556.
The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 1,574, down from 2,582 a week ago and 3,507 two weeks ago.
Hospitalizations
Local COVID-19 hospitalizations remain at their lowest since early September. Mount Nittany Medical Center has 16 COVID-19 inpatients, one more than on Sunday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators for the 15th consecutive day.
The patients range in age from 31 to 100, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Eight are fully vaccinated and eight are not vaccinated.
Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Aug. 21. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 1,399 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 40 fewer than on Sunday, with 260 patients in intensive care [-2] and 164 on ventilators [+2].
Deaths
DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 338.
Only one new COVID-19 death was identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, bringing the statewide total to 43,216.
COVID-19 Community Level
Centre County remains among 15 counties in Pennsylvania that are at the high level for COVID-19 according to new metrics introduced by the Centers for Disease Control on Friday.
COVID-19 community levels measure new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity. At the high level, indoor masking is still recommended. About 37% of counties in the United States, including about 28% of the population, are at the high community level.
At the low and medium levels, there is no recommendation for indoor masking except for individuals at increased risk. In Pennsylvania, 17 counties are at the low level and 35 are at medium.
Nursing and personal care home cases
Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported one new COVID-19 case among residents. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 779 resident cases, 750 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.
Prison cases
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has four active COVID-19 cases among inmates and four among staff.
Rockview state prison has no active inmate cases and three among staff.
Both facilities are in Benner Township.
At Benner, 1,452 inmates are fully vaccinated, 19 are partially vaccinated and 192 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 313 are fully vaccinated and 315 are not vaccinated.
Rockview has 1,695 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 63 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 351 are fully vaccinated and 366 are not vaccinated.
Vaccinations
DOH has not updated vaccination totals since Friday. At last count, 94,096 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 14,072 are partially covered. Booster doses have been administered to 48,662 county residents.
Among the county’s entire population, 69.3% have received at least one dose, 59% are fully vaccinated and 50.6% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.7% have received at least one dose, 63.2% are fully vaccinated and 53.3% have received a booster.
Statewide, 76.5% of adults and 66.9% of the total population are fully vaccinated.
Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
