A State College resident lost $2,900 in Craigslist-based scam, State College police said Wednesday.
The scam was reported Tuesday evening, according to a police log. Police said the resident, of the 400 block of East Beaver Avenue, had advertised an apartment as being available to subletters.
Responding to the Craigslist advertisement, someone sent the resident a check, police said. The respondent also asked for a portion of that money to be returned, according to the police report.
The resident apparently complied. But the check — the check from the respondent — turned out to be a counterfeit, the police report shows.
To avoid being scammed, police said, anyone involved in such a transaction should allow ample time to make sure the check clears.
