Spring Township police officers were caught by surprise, but uninjured, when a runaway tire crashed into the windshield of their cruiser on Monday near Bellefonte.

Officers were monitoring traffic while parked on the median at the 1300 block of Zion Road when the rear driver-side wheel and tire broke loose from a pickup truck traveling westbound, according to a post of the department’s Facebook page.

After bouncing rapidly down the road and crashing into the patrol car’s windshield, the tire launched into the air and off of the opposite side of the road without striking any other vehicles.

The cruiser’s dashboard camera captured the incident on video:

The cruiser sustained “extensive damage,” according to the post, but neither the officers nor the pickup truck driver were injured.

Spring Township police could not immediately be reached for comment about whether a motor vehicle citation will be issued to the driver of the pickup truck.
